Professor

We have been discussing the idea that human well-being does not necessarily improve as a result of increasing production and consumption of goods and services. Some argue that humans already consume too many goods, from clothing to electronic to food; They believe that overconsumption has brought serious problems to human beings and even the earth. Do you agree that overconsumption-buying more than we really need- has become a serious problem? Why?

Paul

I totally agree. We are buying far more than we need, and this cannot go on indefintely. For many years, people have used shopping as a form of entertainment. Products bought on whim fill landfills, and the energy consumed to produce them contributes to global warming crisis. We should start to reduce our consumption gradually.

Claire

I don't agree with the idea that overconsumption is a serious problem, I agree that there is some overconsumption, but it mostly happens to the rich. I think in general, almost everyone only buys what they need. In fact, many people in the world don't even have access to everything they need.

In my opinion, today's people are doing overconsumption, and it is a more and more serious problem. To be more specific, overconsumption may cause the waste of our resources. For instance, my father is a huge fan of beef, and whenever he goes shopping in the supermarket, he would buy a lot of rare beef, and store them in our refrigerator. However, one day, the electricity of our home broke down, and the cooling function of the refrigerator did not work. This caused all the beef my father stored to be bad. In conclusion, overconsumption really does harm to our resources, and is a waste of money. Therefore, when we do purchasing, we should carefully decide what are we really need.

Title: 6

Paragraph 1: In my opinion, overconsumption has indeed become a pressing issue in today's society. This phenomenon not only leads to the depletion of valuable resources but also contributes to environmental degradation and financial imprudence.

Paragraph 2: One significant consequence of overconsumption is the squandering of limited resources. For example, my father, an avid beef enthusiast, often purchases excessive amounts of this meat during grocery shopping trips. He stores the surplus in our refrigerator for future consumption. However, when our home experienced an electrical outage, the refrigerator malfunctioned, and all the stored beef spoiled. This incident highlights how overconsumption can result in resource wastage.

Paragraph 3: Furthermore, overconsumption can negatively impact our finances and contribute to unsustainable practices. As consumers, we must exercise discretion when making purchases and prioritize acquiring only what is truly necessary. By adopting a more mindful approach to consumption, we can mitigate the detrimental effects of overconsumption on both our personal lives and the environment at large. (164 words)
