Take an Interview:
- 1
Describe your typical morning routine. What do you do first and why?
- 2
Do you prefer to eat at home or eat out? Explain your preference.
- 3
How do you manage your time between study and leisure activities?
My morning routine is built around one rule: I do my hardest task before checking my phone. I wake up at six-thirty, drink water, and spend the first thirty minutes reviewing TOEFL vocabulary at my desk. The phone stays in another room. By seven-fifteen, I've already done what most people put off until the afternoon, so the rest of the day feels lighter. This works because morning attention is a finite resource — you spend it on what matters most, or you waste it on notifications.
Q2. Do you prefer to eat at home or eat out? Explain your preference.
I prefer eating at home, mainly because of time rather than money. When I cook, I make a big pot of soup or curry on Sunday and it lasts me three or four days, so on weekdays dinner takes ten minutes. Eating out sounds faster, but by the time I walk to a restaurant, wait for a table and walk back, an hour has gone. I still eat out with friends on Fridays, but that's for the company, not the food.
Q3. How do you manage your time between study and leisure activities?
I manage it with one simple rule: study first, then relax, and never the other way round. On weekdays I study from seven to nine in the evening with my phone switched off, and after nine I'm free to watch something or call my family. Before I had this rule, I'd tell myself I'd watch one episode and then start, and suddenly it was eleven. Having a fixed finishing time actually makes the leisure part more enjoyable, because I'm not feeling guilty.
- 1
What campus facility do you use most often and why?
- 2
Describe a campus event you attended recently. What did you enjoy about it?
- 3
If you could improve one thing about your school, what would it be?
I use the writing center most often — usually once or twice a week. What makes it different from a library is that you book a thirty-minute slot with an actual graduate tutor who reads your draft live. The first time I went, the tutor flagged that my essay was making three arguments instead of one, which my professor had marked but never explained clearly. Since then, I bring every paper before submission. It's the single campus resource that has most directly affected my grades and my confidence as a writer.
Q2. Describe a campus event you attended recently. What did you enjoy about it?
Last month I went to a cultural night organised by the international students' association. Each group had a small table with food from their country, and there were short performances on stage. What I enjoyed most was talking to a student from Ghana who explained how a dish I'd never heard of is cooked for weddings. I usually spend my evenings in the library, so it was nice to meet people outside my department, and I've actually stayed in touch with two of them since then.
Q3. If you could improve one thing about your school, what would it be?
I'd improve the study spaces, because there aren't nearly enough of them. During exam weeks the library is full by nine in the morning, and students end up working in hallways or in the cafeteria, which is really noisy. If the university opened a few empty classrooms in the evenings as quiet study rooms, it would cost almost nothing, since the rooms already exist. I think that would make a bigger difference to students' grades than most of the new buildings they're planning.

- 1
How has technology changed the way you study or learn?
- 2
Do you think social media has a positive or negative effect on students? Why?
- 3
What is the most useful app or tool you use for school?
Technology has changed my studying mainly through one tool: Anki spaced-repetition flashcards. Before, I would re-read notes and feel I had studied; now, the app tests me on the cards I'm closest to forgetting and skips ones I already know. This means I spend twenty minutes a day instead of two hours, and I retain more. The tradeoff is real, though — flashcards work for vocabulary and dates but poorly for essay writing or critical analysis, so I still take handwritten notes for those classes.
Q2. Do you think social media has a positive or negative effect on students? Why?
I think it's mostly negative, at least for how students study. The problem isn't the content itself, it's the interruptions. Every notification pulls your attention away, and it takes several minutes to get back into a difficult reading. I noticed this myself last year: when I deleted one app from my phone during exams, I finished my assignments much earlier. Social media can be useful for group projects, to share files or organise meetings, but students should keep it out of their study time.
Q3. What is the most useful app or tool you use for school?
The most useful tool for me is a shared online document. When my classmates and I work on a group project, we all write in the same file at the same time, so nobody has to email versions back and forth. We can also leave comments on each other's parts. For our last presentation, four of us wrote the whole outline in one evening without meeting in person. It's not exciting technology, but it saves us hours every week.

- 1
What subject are you most interested in and why?
- 2
Do you prefer studying alone or with a group? Explain your choice.
- 3
What career do you hope to pursue after graduation?
Public health is the subject that interests me most, and the reason is a single course on disease epidemiology I took last spring. The professor walked us through how investigators traced a 2014 cholera outbreak in Haiti to a specific contaminated water source within three weeks. What surprised me was how much the field combined biology, statistics, and detective work — three things I had only studied separately. I'm now planning to apply for a master's in public health, with a focus on global infectious disease, a path I had not even considered before that course.
Q2. Do you prefer studying alone or with a group? Explain your choice.
I prefer studying alone for most subjects, because I can go at my own speed. When I study in a group, we often spend half the time chatting or waiting for one person to catch up. That said, for maths I like working with one or two classmates before an exam. If I can explain a problem to someone else, I know I really understand it, and if I can't, I find out where my gap is. So my answer is alone, except right before tests.
Q3. What career do you hope to pursue after graduation?
I hope to become a civil engineer and work on public transport projects. In my city, the new metro line cut my cousin's commute from an hour and a half to about thirty minutes, and it changed her whole daily life. That made me realise how much a single engineering project can affect thousands of people. After graduation, I'd like to join a company that designs rail systems, and later I might do a master's degree to specialise in transport planning.

- 1
Describe a trip or journey that was meaningful to you.
- 2
Tell me about a challenge you overcame. How did you handle it?
- 3
What is the most interesting place you have visited?
The most meaningful trip I have taken was a two-week visit to my grandmother's village in rural Sichuan. Until that trip, my grandmother had been a quiet older woman I saw mostly at family dinners. In the village, she walked me to the rice fields where she had worked as a girl, named every tree we passed, and told me stories I had never heard. By the end of the second week, I understood that my family history extended back four generations on land I had never seen. It changed how I think about identity.
Q2. Tell me about a challenge you overcame. How did you handle it?
A challenge I faced was giving my first presentation in English. I was so nervous that in the practice session I forgot half of what I wanted to say. So I changed my preparation: instead of memorising a script, I wrote just five key words on a card and practised explaining each one out loud, every day for a week. On the day itself I still felt nervous, but I got through all my points, and my professor said my explanation was clear. Now presentations feel much less stressful.
Q3. What is the most interesting place you have visited?
The most interesting place I've visited is an old salt mine near Kraków in Poland. You go more than a hundred metres underground, and everything down there, the walls, the statues, even the chandeliers in a large chapel, is carved out of salt. What surprised me was that miners made most of it in their free time, over hundreds of years. Standing in that chapel, I felt like I was inside a piece of history, not just looking at it in a museum.
- 1
Some people prefer living in a big city. Others prefer a small town. Which do you prefer?
- 2
Do you think it is better to have a wide circle of friends or a few close friends?
- 3
Would you recommend your favorite book or movie to others? Why?
I prefer living in a big city, and the reason is access — to specialists, ideas, and unexpected encounters. In my hometown, which is small, there is one bookstore and three restaurants. In Shanghai, where I now live, I can attend a research talk at one university and then meet a friend studying engineering at another, all in the same afternoon. I understand the appeal of small towns — quiet, lower cost of living, tight community — but for someone in their twenties trying to discover what to do with their life, the density of options in a city is irreplaceable.
Q2. Do you think it is better to have a wide circle of friends or a few close friends?
I think it's better to have a few close friends. When I moved to a new city for university, I knew lots of people online, but the two friends who actually helped me were the ones I'd known since school. One of them spent a whole weekend helping me move into my apartment. A wide circle of friends is fun for parties, but when something goes wrong, you need people who know you well and will really show up.
Q3. Would you recommend your favorite book or movie to others? Why?
Yes, I'd recommend my favourite film, a documentary about a group of students building a solar car. It's not famous, but it shows how much teamwork matters: their first car breaks down in the middle of the race, and they have to fix it overnight in a parking lot. I think anyone who's worked on a group project would recognise those arguments and late nights. It's also only ninety minutes long, so it's easy to convince friends to watch it.
