The professor illustrates the concept of outsider artist using an example of Henry Darger. Henry Darger lived in Chicago in a tiny apartment. He had very few friends. He painted hundreds of paintings and led an isolated life. He kept his work very private. Nobody could see them during his lifetime. One interesting painting of his is a watercolor which depicted adventures of seven children. Darger usually had a hard time drawing human figures. So what he did was he cut out clippings of children from newspapers and pasted them on his painting. Hence his paintings looked cluttered with very little empty space. Another differentiating factor of Darger's painting was that it was nine feet long which is significantly longer than other counterparts paintings during that time.

Revised Answer (140 words):

The professor explains the concept of outsider artist using the example of Henry Darger. Darger lived in Chicago in a small apartment and had very few friends. He created hundreds of paintings while leading an isolated life, keeping his artwork private and unseen during his lifetime. One notable piece is a watercolor depicting the adventures of seven children. Darger struggled with drawing human figures, so he devised a unique solution by cutting out images of children from newspapers and pasting them onto his painting. As a result, his artwork appeared cluttered with minimal empty space. Another distinguishing characteristic of Darger's painting was its length, measuring nine feet long, which was significantly longer than the paintings of his contemporaries at the time.

Original Answer: Henry Dodger Henry Darger(姓名拼写错误) is considered as an outsider artist because firstly he lives alone and he creates his artworks in isolation. He doesn't have a formal art training, so he invented his own style on his own. So his artworks often look unique and sometimes strange. For example, in his artwork of Creature of Seven Children Seven Children's Adventures(表达不准确) , because he doesn't have the conventional training, he doesn't know how to paint people. So he just cut out children's figures from the newspapers. His paintings often seem kind of cluttered and there is no empty space. In addition, his paintings often have wrong sizes.

Revised Answer (140 words):

Henry Darger is considered an outsider artist because he lived in isolation, creating his artworks without any formal art training. As a result, his unique and unconventional style often makes his work appear strange and distinctive. For instance, in his artwork depicting the adventures of seven children, Darger struggled with drawing human figures due to his lack of conventional training. To overcome this challenge, he ingeniously cut out children's figures from newspapers and incorporated them into his painted illustrations of trees, flowers, and grass. Consequently, his paintings often appear cluttered with no empty spaces and unconventional dimensions. By embracing these unorthodox methods, Darger's work exemplifies the essence of outsider art.

Outsider artists are artists that don't know traditional skills and just do things by themselves. Their art will give us a surprise and will make us feel it very strange. In the lecture, the professor explained some drawings of Henry Dodger and indicated his outside artist. First, there is paint named Watercolor. There are six children on the paint, but it is very strange. He cannot paint a child, so he gave it from a newspaper. Seven children combined this piece together and painted it. It is a very large drawing, a large traditional one. With this evidence, we can conclude that Henry Dodger is an outsider artist.

Revised Answer (140 words):

Outsider artists lack traditional skills and often create art independently. Their work often provides surprises and may cause viewers to perceive it as unusual. In the lecture, the professor discussed some drawings by Henry Darger, highlighting his status as an outsider artist. One example is a painting called "Watercolor," which features seven children. Darger struggled with drawing human figures, so he cut out images of children from newspapers and incorporated them into his painting. This unique approach resulted in a visually striking and unconventional piece of art. The painting is also quite large, further distinguishing it from more traditional works. Based on these characteristics and the professor's analysis, it is clear that Henry Darger can be considered an outsider artist.

Outsider art is a condition term ("condition" is not the appropriate word here; "term" is more suitable) where an artist works alone outside the society. So, Henry Deutscher Darger (corrected the spelling of the name) lived himself by himself in an apartment in the 18th century nineteen hundreds (corrected the time period) in Chicago alone, with no friend, and he worked privately, and no one ever saw or responded to his working, his art, when he was still alive. And he actually had a unique kind of work of his own, such as watercolour. Here, he used a watercolour painting to paint the background and illustrate the story of seven children. But he had a hard time drawing a children or a human figure because he was not used to seeing them or meeting them. So, he cut out a piece of art in a magazine or a newspaper, a photo, a picture, a picture of children, or maybe a flower, and so on. So, the picture or the art is more cluttered with details and no place left but empty. And it is not common for the size because it is nine feet long.

Original: Outsider artist is the one who does not learn from traditional art teachers and they like to create their own styles. And so therefore their paintings always look strange to the audience. The professor uses the example of hungry doctor to illustrate this concept. Doctor lived in Chicago alone and he had no friend. He learned art by himself rather than talking to the other people. One example of his painting was the water colored which showed the seven children adventure. He cutted the images from the magazines and showed the seven children. And then he painted flowers and trees with them. It looks so strange to the other people as it has no space for empathy and also the painting was longer.

4.话题发展

The speaker provides a coherent and well-organized response, with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples. However, there is room for improvement in topic development. The speaker should focus on elaborating more on why Henry Darger is considered an Outsider Artist by mentioning his isolation from society, lack of formal artistic training, and the uniqueness of his art due to his unconventional methods. Additionally, the speaker should work on providing more accurate information, such as correctly spelling the artist's name as "Henry Darger" instead of "Henry Dodge."

Original Answer: The professor in the lecture uses an example to illustrate the idea of outsider art. For example, the works of outsider art, Henry Dodge, who had never formally studied art, is very much his own. One Piece is a watercolor painting. He illustrates a story about the adventure of seven children, but Dodge had a really hard time drawing human figures. He simply cut out pictures of children from newspapers and magazines and pasted them into his own, painted illustrations of trees, flowers, and grass. Dodge's picture looks more cultured, is also a lot longer than pictures of most other artists about 9 feet long.

Corrected Answer: The professor in the lecture uses an example to illustrate the concept of outsider art. Specifically, the works of outsider artist Henry Darger, who had never received formal art education, are uniquely his own. One piece is a watercolor painting in which he depicts a story about the adventures of seven children. However, Darger struggled with drawing human figures. He resolved this issue by cutting out images of children from newspapers and magazines and incorporating them into his painted illustrations of trees, flowers, and grass. Darger's artwork appears more cluttered and is significantly longer than that of most other artists, measuring approximately 9 feet in length. (原文中的“Henry Dodge”应改为“Henry Darger”，因为这是艺术家的正确名字。此外，“cultured”应改为“cluttered”，以更准确地描述画作的特点。)

Revised Answer (140 words):

The professor in the lecture discusses the concept of outsider art by examining the works of outsider artist Henry Darger. Darger had never received formal art education and created unique pieces that were distinctly his own. One example is a watercolor painting that tells the story of the adventures of seven children. Darger faced challenges in drawing human figures, so he came up with an innovative solution by cutting out images of children from newspapers and magazines and incorporating them into his painted illustrations of trees, flowers, and grass. This approach resulted in a more cluttered appearance in his artwork, which also tended to be significantly longer than that of most other artists, with some pieces measuring approximately 9 feet in length. This example demonstrates why Henry Darger is considered an Outsider Artist due to his unconventional methods and distinct artistic style.

He spent his spare time creating unique paintings and drawings in his small Chicago apartment, keeping his work completely private. Darger's art, such as his watercolor painting of the adventures of seven children, showcases his unconventional techniques.
