Commitment Device People often have certain goals they want to accomplish in the future. However, their immediate desires can interfere with their ability to accomplish these long-term goals. Psychologists have found that when there is a conflict between immediate desires and long-term goals, it may be helpful to use a commitment device. A commitment device is a plan or arrangement that people make in advance to ensure that, if a conflict occurs, they will continue working toward their long-term goals instead of choosing to satisfy immediate desires. A commitment device forces people to act in their own long-term best interests, increasing their chances of successfully reaching their goals.

Revised Answer (140 words):
In the reading passage, a commitment device is a method that keeps you always heading forward to your long-term goals instead of just satisfying yourself in a short time. The professor in the lecture provides a personal example to illustrate the concept. A few years ago, he wanted to participate in a 10-kilometer race, so he decided to get up early every day and go for a run to improve his fitness. At first, he tried to get up early, but he failed and went back to sleep. Later, he found a friend who was also interested in running. He made a promise with his friend to meet each morning for a run, which served as a commitment device. By keeping this promise, he was able to consistently train, improve his fitness, and eventually perform well in the 10-kilometer race.
