Professor
This week, we discussed the role of technology in society. One idea we discussed was access to mobile(cell) phones across different age groups. It seems that almost everyone has a phone these days. In your opinion, what are the positive or negative effects of parents allowing their children under the age of 12 to have their own mobile phones? Why do you think so?
Kelly
One positive effect is that phones help keep children busy. Since phones often include different applications that can help entertain children, they will never feel bored because of having nothing to do. In fact, children these days are usually engaged in playing fun, interesting games on their phones all the time, which is better than being bored.
Paul
Children should not have access to mobile phones until they are in their teens; these phones may do them more harm than good. Not knowing the potential damage that can be caused by spending too much time looking at their phone screens, children sometimes negatively affect their health, for example, by straining their eyes or making them tired.

While I agree with Paul's assertion that children's access to mobile phones should be limited, I believe that, when used appropriately, smartphones can actually benefit their education. Many smartphones have specific modes designed for children, which restrict app downloads and block access to harmful websites. Furthermore, there are educational apps specifically tailored for young learners that utilize scientific learning curves and methods to enhance their learning experience. For instance, my cousin significantly improved his academic skills by using English language learning apps on his smartphone. These apps provided him with an engaging way to build foundational knowledge. Thus, when used correctly, smartphones can serve as valuable educational tools for children under the age of 12.

Revised Essay: Although I concur with Paul's argument that children's access to mobile phones should be restricted, I contend that smartphones, when utilized properly, can positively impact their education. Numerous smartphones feature child-specific modes that limit app downloads and prevent access to harmful websites. Moreover, there are educational apps designed for young learners that employ scientifically-backed learning techniques to augment their educational experience. For example, my cousin significantly enhanced his academic abilities by engaging with English language learning apps on his smartphone. These apps offered him an interactive method to establish foundational knowledge. Consequently, when employed judiciously, smartphones can function as invaluable educational instruments for children under the age of 12. (115 words)
