The importance of reading is beyond doubt. From kindergartens to universities, teachers and professors are inclined to assign reading tasks to students in order to make them better informed and educated. Here comes the question: is this kind of reading more important than the reading that a student does on his or her own? Please give your opinion and let's start the talk.
Student A
I think reading that a student does on his or her own weighs more than reading assigned by teachers. The thing is, if the students choose the books on their own, it is more likely that the books suit their interest. This makes a huge difference: actively reading something that one is interested in makes the whole process more productive, because only by doing so can a student be fully devoted into reading, instead of rushing to complete a "homework". He or she may underline the important parts, search for information regarding specific information in the book, write down personal reflection of the book, and even share the knowledge or story with his or her friend.
Student B
Reading assignments from the teachers are important and necessary as students are not mature enough to choose their own reading: they will simply choose cheap entertaining material instead of the truly useful books, while teachers are the "sheepherders" to make sure that they make the right choice. Grown up in the information era, filled with guidance to show them a not that clear path, students are not mature enough to make their own judgement. Students may choose futile or superficial stuff unless offered with help from their teachers or professors.

Each person has distictive opinions. James states that it is better for students to choose their own reading task due to suiting their interests. Margaret holds that it is more essential for students to be assigned reading tasks because young children may not have the capacity to judge which book is helpful for them. From my perspective, I partially agree with both of them, but I would add that it depends on their certain age. For those children studying in the kindergarten and in the primary school, since they have not develop of their ability to discern and judge to opte for the suitable book for themselves, it is more prudent for teachers to assign the reading materials such as fairy tales, fables and so on. For those children who are in other stages, there is no denying that they have formed their own judgement to choose their favorite books to read, such as science fiction, documentary and so on. It will be beneficial to their future life, even eventually providing guidance for the career.

-
在引言和正文之间,可以加入一个过渡句,如:“In this essay, I will discuss the viewpoints of both students and provide my own perspective on the issue.” 这样可以使文章更加连贯。

In the realm of education, opinions on the importance of assigned reading versus self-selected reading often vary. James argues that students should choose their own reading materials, as this caters to their interests and promotes active engagement. On the other hand, Margaret contends that assigned reading is crucial, as young learners may lack the ability to discern which books are truly beneficial for them.
While I find merit in both perspectives, I believe that the optimal approach depends on a student's age and stage of development. For younger children in kindergarten and primary school who have not yet developed critical thinking skills, it is prudent for educators to assign age-appropriate materials such as fairy tales and fables. As students progress through their educational journey and develop their own interests and judgment, they should be encouraged to explore a diverse range of genres, including science fiction and documentaries. This exposure can foster lifelong learning habits and even inform future career choices. (163 words)
