For this week’s discussion, let’s think about how playing video games affects children’s development. Some parents concern that video games have tremendous negative effects on children’s learning while some people experts claim that video games are beneficial for children’s development. Before the next class, here is a question for the class discussion board: do you think video games have more positive or negative effects on children?
Student A
I think that playing video games is harmful for children’s development. As we all know, a lot of children are addicted to playing computer and cellphone games because they lack of the self-control ability, which hinders their learning. Also, children will be lazier and unwilling to do exercise in free time.
Student B
In my opinion, playing video games is beneficial for children since it is an effective way for them to release relax. It is common that most children are under great pressure due to the busy schedule, so playing video games is significant for them to release the stress and refresh themselves.

While both Claire and Paul have raised some relevant points, I am inclined to align with Claire's stance that claims that video games are detrimental to children's development. Just to piggyback on what Claire mentioned, since children are easily hooked on video games, they may indulge themselves in playing games without doing outdoor exercise, which will lead to a sedentary lifestyle. What is worse, when abandoning themselves to playing video games, children are cut off from the outside world, rendering them socially isolated. In this sense, both children's physical health and social relationships will suffer due to video games. What is worse, playing video games can also put an extra financial burden on children, given that some children may splurge money on the games they play. Take my brother as an example, he has spent a significant amount of money on buying clothes for the roles in the game, exacerbating his financial strain.

3. Task completeness
The essay does a good job of addressing the specific requirements of the task by discussing both students' viewpoints and providing the writer's own opinion on the matter. However, there is room for improvement in terms of elaborating on the arguments presented by Student B and providing more concrete examples to support the writer's viewpoint. To improve, consider discussing both sides more evenly and incorporating additional evidence to support your claims.
Example 1: Instead of just mentioning that video games help children release stress, provide specific examples or studies that demonstrate this benefit.
Example 2: To strengthen your argument against video games, you could discuss research findings on how excessive gaming affects children's academic performance or mental health.
4. Essay structure and organization
The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, it could benefit from better organization within paragraphs and clearer transitions between ideas. Additionally, try to balance the discussion of both viewpoints more evenly.
Example 1: In your introduction, briefly mention both students' opinions before stating your own stance on the issue. This will provide a clearer roadmap for your essay.
Example 2: Improve transitions between ideas by using phrases like "On the other hand" or "In contrast" when discussing opposing viewpoints or contrasting evidence. This will help guide readers through your essay more smoothly.

While both Claire and Paul have raised some relevant points, I am inclined to align with Claire's stance that claims that video games are detrimental to children's development. Building upon Claire's argument, the addictive nature of video games can lead children to indulge in excessive gaming, neglecting outdoor exercise and resulting in a sedentary lifestyle. Furthermore, this immersion in virtual worlds may isolate them from real-life social interactions, negatively impacting their social relationships. In addition to these concerns, the financial aspect of gaming should not be overlooked. Children may spend significant amounts on in-game purchases, such as character outfits or accessories, exacerbating their financial strain. Consequently, despite potential stress-relief benefits mentioned by Paul, the negative effects of video games on children's physical health, social development, and financial well-being appear to outweigh the positives.
