We've discussing government budgets and the difficult decisions governments must make regarding the use of public fund. Some services are clearly essential and must be paid for by any government. But what about public funding of the arts? Do you believe that government should provide financial support to artists, for example, painters, sculptors, musicians or filmmaker? Why and why not?
Claire
I enjoy art as much as anyone does, but public funds come from taxes, and i don't think taxpayer' hard-earned money should be spent on impractical pr inessential items and services. Artists should support themselves by selling their work to private individuals and companies. If they can't find enough buyers, then maybe they should change careers.
Paul
I personally think art actually is essential. Lots of public spaces in my hometown just would be the same without artwork. From status in public parks to murals painted on the walls of government buildings, my hometown really benefits from funding the artists who created these works. The public spaces are simply more enjoyable for visitors because of the artwork.

When discussing about the topic of whether the government should provide financial support to artists or not, I personally lean towards the later. Although Paul said that artworks are important to the decoration of public parks, I think the government should pay for those who create paintings or sculptures to those parks instead of directly providing financial support to all artists. I think government should pay more attention to build or maintain infrastructure and education of children who lived in a rural area or poor family and have no opportunity to go to school. As Claire said, public funds come from taxes and taxpayers’ hard-earned money should not be spent on impractical items like arts. With those actions, the happiness index of residents in this country will increase, which in turn helps the stability of society. In the contrast, if the government provide financial help to all artists without limitation, someone may utilize this loophole to earn money from the government.

3. Task completeness:
The essay does a fair job of addressing the task requirements, as it presents a clear viewpoint on the issue of government funding for artists. However, the essay could be improved by providing more specific examples and elaborating on the reasons behind the writer's opinion. Suggestions for improvement:
-
Include more specific examples to support your viewpoint.
-
Elaborate on your reasons for believing that government funds should be allocated elsewhere.
-
Incorporate perspectives from both Claire and Paul in your discussion.
Examples:
- Instead of just mentioning that government funds should be used for infrastructure and education, provide concrete examples of how these investments can improve society.
- Discuss how artists can seek alternative sources of funding, such as grants or sponsorships from private organizations.
4. Essay structure and organization:
The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, it could benefit from clearer organization within each paragraph and smoother transitions between ideas.
Suggestions for improvement:
-
Improve paragraph organization by focusing on one main idea per paragraph.

Use clear transitions between ideas and paragraphs to enhance readability.
Examples:
- In your introduction, briefly mention both Claire's and Paul's perspectives before stating your own viewpoint. This will provide context for your discussion.

In the debate regarding government funding for artists, I find myself agreeing with the perspective that opposes such financial support. While Paul argues that art contributes significantly to the aesthetic appeal of public spaces, I believe that the government should only compensate artists who create pieces specifically for these parks and buildings, rather than offering blanket financial assistance to all artists. Instead, the government should prioritize investing in essential infrastructure and educational opportunities for underprivileged children in rural areas or low-income families. As Claire points out, public funds are derived from taxpayers' hard-earned money and should not be allocated to impractical pursuits like art. By focusing on improving infrastructure and education, the overall happiness index of residents will likely increase, leading to a more stable society. Conversely, providing unrestricted financial aid to all artists could result in exploitation of this system for personal gain. (149 words)
