The Erie Canal, built in the early nineteenth century, is an artificial waterway over 300 miles long. It connects the Hudson River north of New York City to the interior of the United States. The canal opened up water transport from much of the Midwest all the way to the East Coast of the United States. However, before its construction, many critics doubted that the proiect would be successful. There seemed to be too many challenges. The first challenge was the local terrain and landscape. The canal had to be dug out and built through areas that would make construction difficult. There were many forests, and clearing a channel through a forest required a slow process of using saws to cut down trees and then axes to chop out the tree stumps and roots that remained. In addition, another challenge was that the canal would also pass through wetlands, in which workers might fall ill from malaria, a disease caused by mosquitoes. The second challenge was a lack of workers. The entire United States at that time had a relatively small population. The massive construction of a canal would require many thousands of workers, which opponents of the canal said the country would not be able to supply. Finally, critics argued that the Erie Canal would not yield enough benefits to justify its high cost. The main purpose of the canal was to facilitate commerce between the coast and the interior of the United States. However, at the time there were simply not very many people who lived or wanted to settle in the Midwest, so there wasn't that much in the way of goods produced there to be sent back to the coast.

The reading passage claims some challenges about the project of the construction of the canal. However, the lecturer challenges this claim by presenting several arguments that contradict the evidence cited in the reading passage. To begin with, the reading worried about the local terrain and landscape. The speaker, however, points out that this argument is not convincing. She eliminates this concern by citing two possible ways. firstly, about the trees that needed to be cleared away. Some useful devices were invested. In order to pull the tree down, a special device called a "stump puller" was invented. An animal pulls the tree out of the ground. Therefore, it can reduce the labor. Besides, the worker wait until winter to do the construction owing to the mosquitoes that cause malaria are not active at that time. Secondly, the passage indicates that a lack of workers is also a challenge for the construction. Nevertheless, the speaker disagrees with this idea by arguing that thousands of migrants arrived in this area around the time of the beginning of the construction. Many people want jobs, and construction can provide them with many different kinds of jobs. As a result, there are sufficient workers for the construction. Finally, the reading material suggests that the Eris Cnanl would not yield enough benefits to justify its high cost. Nonetheless, the professor casts doubt on this claim by pointing out that the reason why not very many people live here is because it is difficult to get there and costly to ship goods back. However, this was all changed by the canal. The travel time decreased from seven weeks to seven days and the cost of shipping is reduced to only 10 dollars by waterways.

The reading passage outlines several challenges concerning the construction of the Erie Canal. However, the lecturer refutes these claims by presenting counterarguments that contradict the evidence provided in the reading passage.
Firstly, the reading passage expresses concern about the local terrain and landscape, posing difficulties for canal construction. The speaker, on the other hand, dismisses this concern by citing two effective solutions. Regarding tree removal, she explains that innovative devices were invented to facilitate this process. For instance, a "stump puller" was developed to extract tree stumps and roots from the ground with minimal manual labor, as strong animals like oxen would pull them out. Furthermore, workers strategically waited until winter to construct through wetlands since malaria-carrying mosquitoes are inactive during that season.
Secondly, the reading passage asserts that a lack of workers posed a significant challenge for canal construction. Contrarily, the lecturer disputes this notion by explaining that coincidentally thousands of immigrants arrived in the United States around the time construction commenced. These newcomers sought employment opportunities and were willing to undertake labor-intensive tasks associated with canal building. Consequently, there was an adequate workforce available for construction.
Lastly, the reading material contends that the Erie Canal would not generate sufficient benefits to justify its high cost. The professor counters this argument by highlighting that limited settlement in the interior of the United States was primarily due to difficulties in accessing these regions and expensive shipping costs for goods transport. The completion of Erie Canal revolutionized this situation as travel time for settlers decreased from six weeks to six days and shipping costs dropped significantly from $100 to $10 via waterways.
